GM has officially unveiled the 2010 Chevy Spark that will have its official unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The Chevy Spark draws its inspiration from the Chevy Beat Concept. The five-door hatchback features Chevy's two-tier grille mated to a wedge-like profile. The interior features a motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster that is mounted on the steering column.

The Spark is powered by either a 1.0L or a 1.2L 4-cylinder engine.

Sales will start in Europe in early 2010 with other markets following. Sales will start in the U.S. in 2011.

GM Cancels Next-Generation Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade SUVs

2008_cadillac_escalade_platinum_disc.jpg
It was already reported that GM had postponed the replacements for the Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade SUVs, but now according to Bob Lutz there will not be replacement at all.

Lutz told the New York Times, “It would have been very difficult in today’s environment to spend a couple of billion dollars to do a replacement.”

The next-generation Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade were set to arrive in 2011 as 2012 models. It is not known if the current models will continue past 2011.

GM announced plans earlier this month to kill the Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7x due to slow sales. GM also announced plans to close its plant in Janesville, Wisconsin that currently produces the GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban.

In Celebration of 100th Birthday, GM Releases List of Top 10 Concept Cars

Narrowly escaping the “blatant self promotion” tag under the shield of their centennial celebration, yesterday GM released a list of the 10 most innovative, groundbreaking concept cars they’ve designed over the past 100 years.

1. 2007 Chevrolet Volt

Scheduled to go from concept to reality in 2010, the Chevy Volt is an extended-range electric vehicle expected to produce zero emissions and consume absolutely no gasoline when averaging about 40 miles a day.

2. 2002 AUTOnomy

The first vehicle designed “from the ground up”, the AUTOnomy was GM’s answer to CEO Rick Wagoner’s question: “What if we were inventing the automobile today instead of a century ago?”

3. 1990 Impact

The precursor to the Chevy Volt, the Impact was GM’s first sport step into the Electric Car field. Some auto enthusiasts speculate that the Impact’s, well, impact, extended beyond GM itself, citing the design similarities between it and the Toyota Prius.

4. 1987 Sunraycer

GM’s solar-powered concept car that won the first World Solar Challenge in Australia, video of which became the most heavily watched film footage in elementary school science classes ever, scandalously upstaging Bill Nye.

5. 1970 Vauxhall SRV

Reportedly never intended for production, the Vauxhall SRV was a media stunt of sorts [albeit an expensive and meticulously engineered one] intended to publicize the Vauxhall line as being on the cutting edge of automobile design.

6. 1965 Experimental Opel GT

An aerodynamic sports coupe, when the Opel GT hit the market abroad in 1968, it became the first European concept car to ever reach actual production.

7. 1961 Chevrolet XP-755 Mako Shark

With Chevy Volt production still 2 years away, the 1961 Chevy Mako Shark is undoubtedly one of the most successful concept cars, at least in terms of longevity and popularity. As a concept car, the Mako Shark served as Chevy’s blueprint for the Corvette, introduced 2 years later in 1963.

8. 1954, 1956, and 1958 Firebird series

Heavily influenced by the aggressive design of early fighter jets, GM’s Firebird concept cars were designed by Harley Earl and were intended to serve no other purpose other than showcase the exceptional talent and skill GM’s design arm possessed.

9. 1951 Le Sabre

GM’s first post-war concept car, the Le Sabre was pitched as “an experimental laboratory on wheels.” All of it’s technologically advanced designs, like a rain sensor that automatically raised the roof and windows during inclement weather, were fully functional and admittedly impressive, even against today’s standards.

10. 1938 Buick Y Job

A pre-war offering from GM, the Buick Y-Job was the brainchild of Harvey Earl and is generally viewed as the first “concept car” ever completely created. When Early retired from GM in 1959, he explained his design philosophy which had catapulted GM into the realms of tremendous success, “You will never know what the industrial products of the future will be like, but the secret is to keep trying to find out.”

GM Sends Congress Plan Asking For $12 To $18 Billion, "Alternatives" For Saturn Brand [Carpocalypse Now]

GM's response to the congressional ultimatum, just released, outlines a need for $12 billion in loans, plus potentially $6 billion later, and plans to reach profitability by pursuing "alternatives" to the Saturn brand and making Pontiac even less desirable.

On the surface, the GM plan seems less ambitious than the Ford plan, though that may just be because GM already has an electric car coming down the pipeline. Their request for $12 billion seems relatively low given their cash situation, but there's a nugget hidden in the release where they mention an additional $6 billion if the market manages to tank even further.

The other big news comes under the "Market and Retail Operations" section of the release which states:

In the U.S., GM will focus its product development and marketing efforts on four core brands – Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. Pontiac will be a specialty brand with reduced product offerings within the Buick-Pontiac-GMC channel. Hummer has recently been put under strategic review, which includes the possible sale of the brand, and GM will immediately undertake a global strategic review of the Saab brand. As part of the plan, the company also will accelerate discussions with the Saturn retailers, consistent with their unique relationship, to explore alternatives for the Saturn brand.

From this we understand Pontiac will either be made the performance brand they were supposed to be all along by nixing duplicate vehilces like the G3, G5 and G6 or made into a less fun crappy brand by axing the G8, G8 ST and Solstice. As for the part about Saturn, we'd be worried if we owned a Saturn dealership right now.

Additionally, GM supports making more green vehilces and a government oversight board that would allow them to restructure (read "deal with union contracts") in a more efficient way. Full release below.

GM Submits Plan for Long-Term Viability to the U.S. Congress

WASHINGTON – General Motors Corp. today submitted a plan to use Federal bridge loans to create a leaner, more competitive company, one that is profitable and self-sustaining for the long term.

The plan, submitted in response to Congressional hearings in November, includes a detailed blueprint for a successful, sustainable General Motors. Building on a product renaissance and comprehensive restructuring that has been under way for several years, the plan calls for:

* Increased production of fuel-efficient vehicles and energy-saving technologies;
* Rationalization of brands, models and retail outlets;
* Reduced wage and benefit costs, including further reductions in executive compensation;
* Significant capital structure restructuring;
* Further consolidation in manufacturing operations.

GM is requesting term loans of up to $12 billion to provide adequate liquidity levels through December 31, 2009. GM anticipates an initial draw of $4 billion in December 2008. In addition to the bridge loans, the company is requesting a $6 billion line of credit to provide liquidity should a severe market downturn persist. GM’s intent is to begin to repay the loans as soon as 2011.

Any draws would be conditioned on achieving specific restructuring requirements in the plan. To help expedite these actions and protect the taxpayers, GM is also seeking the creation of a Federal oversight board to oversee the loans and restructuring plan.

GM is requesting the bridge loans and credit line because of a sharp industry-wide decline in vehicle sales. This decline, due in large part to tight credit and record-low consumer confidence, has led to a corresponding drop in dealer orders that is adversely impacting GM’s first-quarter production schedules, revenue forecasts, and liquidity outlook. Federal assistance would enable GM to weather a credit crisis that has driven U.S. industry sales to their lowest per-capita level in half a century, and help the company emerge fully competitive with all manufacturers operating in the U.S.

The complete GM plan is available online . Following are highlights from the plan.

Product Portfolio and Fuel Efficiency – GM has made significant progress in revamping its product lineup, with new GM cars like the Chevy Malibu, Cadillac CTS, Saturn Aura and Opel/Vauxhall Insignia earning car of the year awards. While remaining a full-line manufacturer, GM will substantially change its product mix over the next four years, and launch predominately high mileage, energy-efficient cars and crossovers.

In addition, the Chevy Volt, which can travel up to 40 miles on electricity alone, is scheduled for production in 2010, and GM is planning other vehicles using Volt’s extended-range electric drivetrain. By 2012, more than half of GM vehicles will be flex-fuel capable, and the company will offer 15 hybrid models. GM will continue development of hydrogen fuel cell technology, which, when commercially deployed, will reduce automotive emissions to just water vapor.

During the 2009-12 plan window, GM will invest approximately $2.9 billion in alternative fuels and advanced propulsion technologies, which offer fuel economy improvements ranging from 12 percent to 120 percent, compared with conventional gas engines. As a result, we expect GM to become a significant creator of green jobs in the United States, as well helping suppliers and dealers transform the U.S. economy.

Market and Retail Operations – In the U.S., GM will focus its product development and marketing efforts on four core brands – Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

Manufacturing and Structural Costs – GM will accelerate its current efforts to reduce manufacturing and structural costs, building on significant progress made over the past several years. GM currently has the most productive assembly plants in 11 of the 20 product segments measured by the Harbour Report, and it is a global leader in workplace safety. With the recently negotiated wage rates, turnover expected in our workforce, planned assembly plant consolidations, further productivity improvements in the plan, and additional changes to be negotiated, GM's wages and benefits for both current workers and new hires will be fully competitive with Toyota by 2012.

Balance Sheet Restructuring – Under the plan, GM would significantly reduce the debt currently carried on its balance sheet. GM plans to engage current lenders, bond holders and its unions to negotiate the needed changes. GM’s plan would preserve the status of existing trade creditors and honor all outstanding warranty obligations to both dealers and consumers, in the U.S. and globally.

Compensation and Dividends – The plan calls for shared sacrifice, including further reduction in the number of executives and total compensation paid to senior leadership. For example, the chairman and CEO will reduce his salary to $1 per year. The plan also requires further changes in existing labor agreements, including job security provisions, paid time-off, and post-retirement health-care obligations. The common stock dividend will remain suspended during the life of the loans.

Temporary Federal Bridge Loans – GM is seeking a term bridge loan facility from the Federal government of $12 billion to cover operating requirements under a baseline forecast of 12 million U.S. industry vehicle sales for 2009. In addition, GM is seeking a revolving credit facility of $6 billion that could be drawn should severe industry conditions continue, resulting in sales of 10.5 million total vehicles in 2009. This bridge loan is expected to be fully repaid by 2012 under the baseline industry assumptions. Also, warrants issued as part of the loans would allow taxpayers to benefit from growth in the company’s share price that might result from successful completion of the plan.

Once GM has completed the restructuring actions laid out in the plan, the company will be able to operate profitably at industry volumes between 12.5 and 13 million vehicles. This is substantially below the 17 million industry levels averaged over the last nine years, so it is considered to be a reasonably conservative assumption for gauging liquidity needs.

Federal Oversight Board – Given the importance and urgency of this restructuring for GM, other domestic manufacturers and the U.S. economy as a whole, the company supports the formation of a Federal oversight board. The board would help facilitate restructuring negotiations with a range of stakeholders.

GM’s Commitment to Success

General Motors and its management are committed to the success of the plan summarized in the Congressional submission. The company’s responsibility to its customers, shareholders, employees, retirees, dealers and suppliers is well recognized, as is its century-long commitment to our nation.

GM has never failed to meet a Congressional mandate in the important areas of fuel efficiency and vehicle emissions. We are among the leaders today in fuel efficiency, and set the industry standard for green manufacturing methods. We are committed to meeting the new fuel economy requirements of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act. The company’s role in creating green technology and high-paying jobs of the future will increase substantially as a result of implementing the plan.

GM is proud of its century of contributions to the growth of our nation, and the company looks forward to making an equally meaningful contribution over the next century.

Financiapocalpyse Kills One Drop Top Muscle Car, Delays Another [Financiapocalypse]

Bad news for fans of drop top muscle cars: according to multiple sources, the Dodge Challenger Convertible has been canceled and the Chevy Camaro Convertible delayed for at least a year. Luckily Ford will be showing a 2010 Ford Mustang Convertible at next week’s LA Auto Show, with sales scheduled to start in Spring ’09.

Chrysler and GM’s decisions to respectively kill and delay the ultimate poser’s cars, convertible muscle cars were made for the same reason: money. The unibody Challenger is, unbelievably, not originally engineered to lose its top. So engineering a model capable of retaining its rigidity is, due to the financiapocalypse, now considered wayyy to expensive. Speaking to Motor Trend, a company insider described the Challenger convertible as, “dead as a doornail.”

Bankruptcy-imminent GM simply can’t afford to roll out its 2010 Chevy Camaro convertible, even though plans for it were built in from the beginning. It’ll need to wait until the company either secures a massive loan, gets bought by the Chinese or sees significant profits from other products that have already been postponed before it can afford to put the Camaro convertible into production.

All this leaves the 2010 Ford Mustang sitting pretty. In addition to the convertible, they’ll show glass roof and coupe versions in LA, all of which go on sale next year. [via MotorTrend]

President Bush Rumored To Consider Handing Over $25 Billion Loan Program To Automakers Like, Now [Financiapocalypse]

MSNBC is reporting (UPDATED with video) President-current Bush has said he'll consider amending the $25 billion automaker low-interest loan guarantee program to allow the automakers to get the money right now and use it for whatever they need. The decision is being made because many economists say helping US automakers is a big part of preventing the economy from going even further into the hole. This comes a day after would-be Detroit savior President-elect Barack Obama, who has said an automaker bailout is super important, met with President Bush to discuss steps he'd like to see taken, including part two of his three-part economic strategy — help for the auto industry. Why the sudden change from the Bush administration?

According to the NY Times, the President would consider signing a stimulus package and help out the auto industry if Obama dropped his opposition to a free-trade agreement with Colombia. Maybe.

Mr. Bush indicated at the meeting that he might support some aid and a broader economic stimulus package if Mr. Obama and Congressional Democrats dropped their opposition to a free-trade agreement with Colombia, a measure for which Mr. Bush has long fought, people familiar with the discussion said.

The Bush administration, which has presided over a major intervention in the financial industry, has balked at allowing the automakers to tap into the $700 billion bailout fund, despite warnings last week that General Motors might not survive the year.

Conflicting reports have emerged, something that happens when you have two press corps — one following the President-current and one following the President-elect — but MSNBC is reporting that Bush has been friendlier to an automaker bailout. More information as we get it.

Obama agrees with need to view Detroit 3 reorganization plans

President-Elect Barack Obama has been in favor of assisting Detroit automakers, but the soon-to-be Commander in Chief agrees with a Congressional demand to see concrete plans before any checks are signed. Obama's Cheif of Staff, David Axelrod, was all over the boob tube Sunday sharing the President Elect's thoughts on what the industry needs to do, saying a real plan to "retool and rationalize" is needed. Without a solid plan, Axelrod said there is little taxpayer dollars can do to fix the problem. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi added that she hopes the automakers have "gotten the message" about the need for a plan, which is due to Congress by December 2nd.

Axelrod also took a bit of a shot at the Detroit execs when he said that they need to "take a commercial flight" to discuss the plan on December 8th. We'd take that a step further and suggest that the three automakers get in their most fuel efficient vehicles and take a drive to our nation's capital.

Cervone was officially appointed senior VP and chief communications officer ...

Tony CervoneAfter his impressive handling of the company’s bankruptcy rumors, Tony Cervone, former No. 2 of General Motors’ global public relations division, leaves his post to join the top ranks of United Airlines.

Cervone, 46, was chosen to become the new senior vice president and chief communications officer of UAL Corp. This is the parent company of the United Airlines.

As of today, there is no news yet about Cervone’s successor in GM. Right before he left the company, he was able to ask for a $13.4 billion federal loan from the government under former Pres. George W. Bush’s term. General Motors was able to get $9.4 billion before the aid was abruptly stopped by the White House very recently.

Cervone was chosen by United Airlines Corporation because of his great leadership and team playing skills. The General Motors save certainly proved to be a golden feather on Tony Cervone’s cap.

According to UAL President and CEO Glenn Tilton, Tony Cervone is just what the company needs to better communicate UAL’s business plans to the government and the general public.

Tony Cervone will be handling all internal and external communications in UAL. He will be at the head of UAL’s partnership communications, crisis communications, and public & media relations.

Before the UAL appointment, Cervone was considered a candidate for the succession of retiring GM PR Chief Steve Harris. Cervone was officially appointed senior VP and chief communications officer in UAL last February 4 in Chicago.

The time for housekeeping has come for General Motors.

1996 Buick Custom BlackhawkThe time for housekeeping has come for General Motors. Approximately 200 cars were auctioned in Scottsdale, Ariz. The cars were from the manufacturer’s Heritage Fleet. The auction was done at Barrett-Jackson collector car auction.

They have been doing this kind of movement in the past. It has been a normal housekeeping for them as part of the whole process.

Included in the auction was a 1996 Buick Custom Blackhawk (photo right). Up for grabs at that time was the 2000 Buick Custom Blackhawk which was sold at $475,000. A 1904 Oldsmobile Turning Runaboout was even sold. Truly a housekeeping stage for General Motors.

For the racers, two Pennzoil-liveried IRL race cars were included in the auction. A Chevy S-10 stadium race truck was also auctioned along with the 1998 Chevy S-10 drag truck.

Pennzoil Panther Indy Car

Ford was not out of the loop. It also had cars sold in that season. The list includes a Mustang Cobra Jet drag car and the Raptor F-150. These units must have been very expensive and people think that the manufacturers have earned everything from such an event. But not all of the auctioned items were actually profiteering. Some chunk of the proceeds went to charitable institutions.

As expected, General Motors have gotten most of the earning. Companies need the money more than anything else. This is especially true to them since a number of highly sophisticated, expensive vehicles were sold out.

Now you know it, you must be regretting for not being a part of it.
